UK Home office announces Christmas alcohol blitz

A Christmas alcohol blitz to tackle drink-fuelled disorder and underage drinking has been announced by home office
minister Hazel Blears.

The crackdown in town centres across the country in December and January is the second phase of a campaign by the home office
and the police to cut alcohol-related violence.

It will build on the good practice developed and lessons learned from the blitz run across the country in summer.

That campaign recorded a nine per cent fall in serious violent crime in participating areas, compared to a one per cent
increase in areas that did not take part.

"The summer blitz on binge drinking led by the police and other partners was a real success in raising awareness of the need
to tackle alcohol-related violence and disorder," said Ms Blears.

"Christmas is a time when people should be able to have a few drinks and enjoy themselves, but should not be an excuse for
violent and anti-social behaviour by a minority, spoiling enjoyment for everyone else."

The campaign will run from December 15th to January 1st.
